Sara undertook her PhD studies at the University College London and in 2013 joined Professor Marion MacFarlane’s group at MRC in Leicester as a post-doctoral researcher. Here she developed new mouse models of mesothelioma and studied cell death associated to carbon nanotubes and asbestos toxicity. In 2018 she joined Dr. Claire Palles at the University of Birmingham as Research Fellow. Her key achievements during her time were: studying germline and somatic variants in base excision repair genes, describing a variant associated with cardiovascular toxicity in study of
fluoropyrimidine based chemotherapy and describing new loci associated with Barrett oesophagus and oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Sara joined Mazzarella's lab in December 2023 to work on a project with the aim to reclassify variants of unknown significance in cancer-predisposing genes through CRISPR-based screens.
